Children’s Literacy and Reading News Roundup – 4 May

jpg_book001Jen Robinson is hosting this week’s edition of the children’s literacy and reading news round-up, brought to you by Jen Robinson’s Book Page and Scrub-a-Dub-Tub, a Reading Tub blog.

There was plenty of news around the Kidlitosphere last week — including the “soft launch” of  Booklights, a new literacy/reading blog hosted by PBS Parents. It’s already off to a great start with some picture book recommendations from Jen, Pam Coughlin (MotherReader), and Susan Kusel (Wizards Wireless).

As in week’s past, Jen Robinson and I collected news-you-can use in the categories of  literacy & reading-related events; raising readers; literacy and reading programs and research; 21st century literacies; and other new resources.

Jen offers some updates to recent news (hint: the Red Sox are involved), but my favorites are the inspiring stories … like this article Jen found in the (Columbus) Ledger-Enquirer about a police officer participating in Heroes Read Day at the Columbus Public Library.

My favorite reading tip of the week had to be from Mary Ostyn:  “Let your kids read under the covers with a flashlight late at night. Pretend not to notice.” A mom after my own heart!

As you’ll see in Roundup over at Jen’s , we pulled a number of items from the Everybody Wins posts on Twitter. Their tweets are informative and timely … it’s like having a newscrawl for literacy and reading.
