Poetry Friday – Ouch! An Original Poem

My first Poetry Friday!

Literacy note: Poetry is a great way to engage kids in reading. Like full-length stories, poems for children often have that sing-song cadence that helps them practice words and sounds, stretch their imagination, and helps them see that language (and ultimately reading) isn’t stuffy. Because poetry lines are generally short, there is a lot of “white space” (and sometimes illustrations) on a page … an endearing trait for resistant readers!

Now to my poem. It has been a very long time since my brain has wandered down this path, but this one came to me as I was leaving the office yesterday, dodging a mosaic of books.

OUCH!

Do not sneak
into the office
when the world is dark
and there is no light

That carpet of books
so pretty in sunshine
is nothing but
toe stubble at night!

Be sure to visit Poetry for Children, our host for Poetry Friday this week.
