It's Christmas Eve and the animals wash their stockings to have them ready for Santa to fill. Only their stockings don't seem to fit, and the gifts aren't quite what they expected.
The story offers an opportunity to talk about friendship and problem solving set in a Christmas context.

Read with a child who was 3 years old.
Borrow, at least at first. Although listed for only infants/preschoolers at Amazon, it has potential as a read-aloud book for beginning readers.
S/He asked for this book night-after-night for almost two weeks. (Then it had to go back to the Library.) S/He liked seeing the animals' reactions to their gifts.
This was fun to read. The animals are a nice change from the usual picture-book menagerie and the illustrations aren't your usual Christmas-card picture.
The book moves quickly, and the illustrations carry it along nicely.
