A Passion For Elephants

As a little girl, Cynthia Moss loved animals, especially big animals. When she grew up, she moved to Africa and fell in love with the elephants. It wasn't long before she began her illustrious career as a scientist and advocate for these wonderful creatures. Moss worked to ban the practice of hunting for ivory.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This picture book biography expands global awareness. It offers a fascinating subject and teaches kids about protecting the environment and animals.

Content Awareness Factors:

Although this is a picture book, it is not for a preschool audience. Some of the illustrations and themes were a little advanced for my three year old.

Little Kid Reaction

My five year old liked the book, but my three year old did not as much. I think it may have been too old for his interests. I was surprised that my five year old liked it. I didn't think she would enjoy a biography, but I'm pleased that she did ... and we read this several times.

Big Kid Reaction

This is a fascinating story and a great first biography for my older child but I did not love it as much as she did. Some of the illustrations depicting dead elephants and bloody tusks were too much for my little boy.

Type of Book:
This is a child-friendly biography of a very important scientist.
Educational Themes:

In addition to exploring the life of a scientist, this is a book that can expand a child's world view by introducing Africa (geography), elephants (habitat), endangerment, and international law.

Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
10 and Up
Recommended Age To Read Together:
5 and Up
Age of child:
Read with children ages 3 and 5.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. This is a good book to read - especially with young girls interested in science. Even so, I'm not sure they would return to this over and over again, but I definitely think it would be a good library book.
