Childhood Illnesses Defined

Summary:

Each letter of the alphabet is matched to an illness, skill, or personal trait that children have.

Pros:

Readers can learn about the biology behind personal or medical challenges that peers and classmates may face. Some readers will be excited to see themselves pictured in an illustration.

Cons:

This is not a story, but an inventory of different childhood diseases. Not all 26 letters are partnered with a disease or challenge. Some - like "reading" and "unique" are not disabilities, which undercuts the book's stated purpose.

Type of Book:
This picture book explains different childhood illnesses and conditions.
Educational Themes:

Each of the diseases/illnesses is explained with a short description. It is more of an overview of what causes the disease or how it presents, but there is little detail. If there are specific illnesses of interest, we recommend going to the library. Your librarian not only can help you with age-appropriate books that explain these conditions they can also identify stories that can help your child connect and better understand them.

Reading Level:
unknown
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
11 and Up
Recommended Age To Read Together:
9 & Up
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow or skip. You'll read this to get an overview of illnesses your child may see in peers, but this isn't a story.
