Alex And The Ironic Gentleman

Summary:

Alexandra Morningside never liked the Wigpowder-Steele Academy ... until sixth grade, that is. When Alex learns that Mr. Underwood, her teacher, is a descendant of the Infamous Wigpowder, founder and pirate, she volunteers to help him claim his inheritance. Not as easy as it sounds, especially when Mr. Underwood is kidnapped! And so her journey toward finding (and becoming) a pirate begins.

Young Reader Reaction

I felt like the book was corny, especially the end. The whole book can be summarized as someone's friend is kidnapped, she goes on an adventure to find him, she finds friends to help her, and in the end, the two friends are reunited. Since this book does not feel very unique, I would not recommend this book. A book that I would recommend that is very similar to this one is Alice in Wonderland, because it is practically the same thing. I would also recommend Peter Pan because it is similar as well.

Parent Reaction

Refreshing! Finally, a fantasy that DOESN'T involve magic and sorcery! The story is captivating, Alex is endearing, and the author doesn't take herself (or you) too seriously! The book offers fantasy, adventure, and humor all in great balance!
