Alphabet Of Insects

There is an insect (aka bug) for every letter of the alphabet. Even the letter X! Short rhyming verse and illustrations introduce kids to insects they are familiar with and some unusual ones, too.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Expand your knowledge of the insect world and practice your ABCs at the same time. This picture book has the potential to keep kids engaged for hours.

Content Awareness Factors:

If you are TRULY squeamish about bugs -- even in pictures -- then you may want a different alphabet book.

Little Kid Reaction

There were lots of "ews" and "yucks" as we read this book. Still, we read it several times over the course of a weekend. She was more interested in listening to and adding harmony to the song on the CD that comes with the book. She replayed the CD a lot more than she read the book.

Parent Reaction

A two-page spread of a velvet ant would get a reaction from just about everyone. The illustrations are good: detailed and accurate but still "soft" enough to take out the harshness of a photograph. We found the rhyming a little awkward at times, but not disruptive to reading.

Type of Book:
Travel through the alphabet and learn about bugs along the way. The book also includes a CD with read-along and song material.
Educational Themes:

This non-fiction book helps kids learn their ABCs and letter sounds, while at the same time introducing them to insects of all varieties. The 4-line poems themselves offer very basic detail, but there is a glossary with more facts, and the CD has additional information, too. This is one you can use a guide in your backyard.

Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
8 to 10
Recommended Age To Read Together:
4 to 8
Age of child:
Shared with 6-year-old girl.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow, at least. If you are reading with a toddler/preschooler, this book has the potential to grow with your child for several years. First, learning and recognizing the alphabet, then studying insects.
