America's Real First Thanksgiving; St. Augustine, Florida, September 8, 1565

You may know that St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest US city. But there is so much more to learn. Photographs and illustrations complement a story that describes the founding of the city, and offers history lessons in the cultures and traditions seen in modern-day Florida.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This illustrated history offers pre-teen and reluctant readers the opportunity to become fascinated by history. The glossary and lists of resources in the back help add to the opportunities for learning.

Content Awareness Factors:

None, really. This is not a story about celebrating Thanksgiving dinner. It is the history of St. Augustine and its place in history as the host to the first thanksgiving in the New World.

Young Reader Reaction

This was an interesting book, because it takes you back in time. It is a book I would read again. I would recommend this book to other people because they need to know about America's first great holiday.

Parent Reaction

This is fascinating reading. The cover is deceptive, as I opened the book expecting a holiday story. Instead, I had a history and geography lesson! The maps are intriguing and could be a book until themselves.

Type of Book:
This illustrated chapter book offers information about a little-known piece of history.
Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
12 and Up
Recommended Age To Read Together:
9 to 12
Age of child:
Read by a student at Robbinsdale Cooper High School, New Hope, MN. This was part of our Use Your ABCs classroom literacy project.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. This is a very good book and well worth reading. It should be in every school library, and is an excellent book for history and geography, and will also help remedial or reluctant readers. It is a niche buy for Floridians.
