Andy Shane And The Queen Of Egypt
Today's the start of the Culture Fair project. Each student in Ms. Janice's class will do a project related to an African country. When Ms. Janice didn't hear Andy's say "Egypt," Delores Starbuckle does her best to answer for him (and change his choice). In the process she announces to the class that she is the Queen of Egypt, and is left having to persuade Andy that they can work together. Andy needs time to think about it.
This early chapter book offers a fast-moving, funny story with characters kids can relate to. The illustrations and large type will make it attractive to remedial and reluctant readers.

She liked the story ... especially the pineapple pyramids. We had lots of questions about Egypt and tee ball! She was fascinated by Dolores' sandals and wanted to know why you couldn't see the glitter in the pictures!
This was fun to read. Andy and Delores are typical kids, without being caricatures or stereotypes. This is part of a series, but this was our first title and we didn't feel "lost."
This short-chapter book offers a humorous story about friendship, passion, and school projects!
Although this is largely a story for helping kids develop their vocabulary and reading skills, the author does a fantastic job introducing some facts about African countries, particularly Egypt. There are also discussion themes about teamwork, respect, passion, and even recycling (check out Dolores' sandals!)

Borrow, at least. This has the potential of being like Encyclopedia Brown: a quick, fun read when you need a fix. This is a book you can read to a child, read together (as partners), or one they'll read by themselves as they become more proficient.
