Well? Are you? Roy wants to know.

Summary:

Roy gets a saddle for his birthday and goes in search of a horse. He's never seen one, so he goes on a search. He meets a snake, a crab, a pig, and even a zebra. Once Roy sees a horse he looks it over and makes sure it has all the characteristics he has learned it should have. It has four legs, is friendly, doesn’t lay eggs, and it can run fast, but it doesn't have stripes. Has he really found a horse?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Humor, interesting facts about animals, and a funny ending make this an enjoyable book for parents and kids alike.

Content Awareness Factors:

The idea that Roy has no idea what a horse looks like is a little far fetched.

Little Kid Reaction

My daughter picked this book because of the title, and she laughed every time Roy asked an animal if it was a horse ... every time we read the book. She learned that different animals can have unique characteristics, but can also be a lot a like. She also learned that books can be humorous as well as for learning.

Parent Reaction

I was happy to see my daughter laughing and enjoying the story. This is cute and a quick read. It is a little bit silly that Roy would not know what a horse really looked like or that a saddle is meant for the horse’s back, not his. Still, the ending is funny, and any child would enjoy the story.

Type of Book:
This is a humorous picture book story about a boy trying to find a horse.
Educational Themes:

Sometimes kids think all we do is try to teach with books. This is a great pick to show them that reading can be just for fun, too. You can talk about animals and animal characteristics, but you can also just enjoy the silliness.
