Baby Bear Discovers The World

Summary:

Baby Bear has decided he's ready to explore the world. Yet everywhere he goes in the forest, the animals ask about his mother, because he is "too small" to be out on his own. But Baby Bear is undeterred. He keeps exploring the world. When he finds some birdseed, he learns that being out on his own is not so sweet after all. But where's Mama?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

The book is illustrated with photographs, adding an element of realism (and humor) to the story. The story is complemented with pages of bear facts, as well as some out-take photos.

Content Awareness Factors:

None, really.

Little Kid Reaction

Our child was more interested in talking about the photographs than listening to the story. We got through one reading, but were never able to engage our child in reading it again.

Big Kid Reaction

The photographic journey (vice traditional illustrations) make this a nice change for a picture book. The story is fairly basic (little bear is growing up and thinks he can do things on his own) and will probably garner more interest from toddlers and preschoolers.

Type of Book:
This is a photographic story of a young bear exploring the woods.
Educational Themes:

The theme is a classic one for parents trying to help their child understand that "bigger" doesn't always mean "independent." There are plenty of lessons you can draw from the book, from safety lessons about being careful when you approach strangers (skunk) and wandering away to life lessons about stealing and trespassing.

Reading Level:
2.2
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
7 to 10
Recommended Age To Read Together:
3 to 8
Age of child:
Read with 5-year-old child.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. The story is one that kids will enjoy, and the photography makes it different than most. Still, it is a book that your child will likely outgrow in a short period of time.
