Chips A Hometown Hero

Summary:

Chips, a precocious fun-loving mongrel pup, part husky, German shepherd, and collie, was adopted by a caring family. Chips easily adjusted to being a playful family pet but never lost his penchant for adventure. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chips’ family registered him in the “Dogs For Defense” program. Chips was trained and shipped overseas to serve with US soldiers in the Allied liberation of Africa, Italy, and France.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This is a great story. It is both wholesome and educational. This is one of those books that becomes lop-eared from use. Read it and see why.

Young Reader Reaction

I liked the whole concept of the story and what I learned about how dogs helped out in the War. I would like to read more books on this subject. The book will turn any dog HATER into a dog LOVER. What I especially liked was how I was somewhat let in on Chips' feelings, like how he could "sense war meant something bad".

Parent Reaction

Though fictional, it is based on the adventures of the most highly decorated K-9 to serve in WWII. Don’t let the fact that this is a story about dogs influence your decision to buy, read, and share this book. The story really focuses on the dog, the family, community, the early 1940s in small-town America. I would put this in my "Top 10" of the books I've reviewed.

Type of Book:
This is the story of the heroic accomplishments of the most decorated K-9 hero of World War II.
Educational Themes:

The book reminds us of how various animal species have valiantly demonstrated in helping mankind meet the challenges of earthquakes, floods, fire & rescue situations, and crime fighting.
