Hattie, Get A Haircut!

Summary:

Hattie hates to have her hair cut and is quite vehement about it. The night before her scheduled cut, Hattie dreams that her hair gets so long her grandmothers start knitting it and birds build nests.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This is the perfect book for a child who doesn't like to sit still for the barber, but it is also a delightful poem touched with humor and a lovely little lesson in giving.

Content Awareness Factors:

None, though I would have liked to see this book include the name, Website or other contact information of a charity that handles the donation of hair. This lapse may be forgiven, however, for other than that, Hattie is a honey!

Little Kid Reaction

Parent Reaction

The rhyme is easy, keeps the subject light and adds to the humor. Monica Kendall's pencil and watercolor illustrations capture Hattie's moods perfectly. As I recall, my daughter wasn't nearly so vocal so even parents who think their child tolerates getting a haircut well might be mistaken.

Type of Book:
This is a story about turning a child's fear into a gift for others.
Educational Themes:

Although the obvious theme is overcoming one's fears, the idea of "doing for others" is not so subtle that it will be lost on the child. A great way to introduce philanthropy to a preschooler.
