Horrid Henry And The Mega-mean Time Machine

Horrid Henry returns with four new stories of misadventure, from a hike in the woods to dinner at a fine restaurant. After Henry duped his brother into thinking he had been transported to the future, Perfect Peter did the unthinkable: he plotted revenge. What could he do to avenge Horrid Henry's constant humiliation?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Lots of action and stories about kids their own age will entice eager and reluctant readers alike.

Content Awareness Factors:

Amazon lists the books as for ages 4 to 8. You may want to screen before reading with a tantrum-prone preschooler or a child who is prone to playing elaborate tricks on their siblings.

Little Kid Reaction

When we read our first Horrid Henry book, this is the book previewed in the back. Our daughter immediately asked that this be her next book. She had figured out that the book isn't organized in chapters, so we read the stories in the order she selected, not as they are listed in the table of contents. She was most interested in the title story about the time machine.

Parent Reaction

This is the first book in the series where we found some truly laugh-out-loud moments. The story of the hike, in particular, has some Three Stooges-type elements to it. Still, the humor (for us) is offset by Henry's meanness.

Type of Book:
This series about a young boy offers four short stories to egngage reluctant and transitional readers.

There are plenty of opportunities to talk about manners, appropriate behavior, etc. in these stories.
