This is the memoir of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the greatest Viking that ever lived. As a boy, he and the other children of Berk took part in the Pirate Training Program. While on a herding exercise, the Exterminators (big, evil, fiery dragons) set fire to the mountains. All but three children escape: Goliath, Hiccup, and Gobber, their teacher. A man in a fireproof suit saves them. He introduces himself as Humungously Hotshot, one of the greatest heroes on the planet. Hiccup's father Stoick appoints Humungous as Hiccup’s bodyguard.
Hotshot agrees to be Hiccup's bodyguard, but then puts Hiccup in danger, only to save him later. Turns out, Hotshot is conflicted: he fell in love with a Viking woman but failed in his quest to earn her hand in marriage. When he finally accomplished the quest, the woman was married ... and now the challenger wants Hotshot to kill Hiccup. What will Hotshot do? Is Hiccup safe?
Lots of action and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments make this a fun, quick read for readers and listeners.
Cressida Cowell's stories about Hiccup and his adventures are always extremely entertaining. There is a lot of humor involved, and the action progresses really quickly. The best aspect of this book though is that, even though it seems to be a children’s book, it’s actually quite a satisfying read for any reader of any age and any gender. Hiccup is a character people can relate to: an average boy who finds out that he is actually capable of doing wonders.
This is a middle grade novel that is part of the How to Train Your Dragon series.
This is a series meant to be read for fun. That said, there are lessons in honesty, integrity, friendship, family, and self esteem.
