Interrupting Chicken

Summary:

It is bedtime, and Papa and Little Red Chicken are settling in to read Hansel and Gretel. Little Red promises she won't interrupt papa while he reads ... but she has new ideas on how the story should go. For each story Papa tries to read, Little Red jumps in with a new version. How was Papa ever going to get Little Red to settle down and go to sleep?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This is a wonderful bedtime story ... especially for kids who tend to be active as they prepare to settle in for the night. It has great potential as an easy reader and for partner reading.

Content Awareness Factors:

None.

Little Kid Reaction

Our daughter laughed her way through every page. She picked this up several days in a row and loved to act out the part of Little Red.

Parent Reaction

Boy, I wish we had had this book four years ago! The lessons about interrupting are still good, but the now-8-year-old sees this as a story for "little kids." This is fun to read together and the twist at the end is just great.

Type of Book:
This is a humorous look at beloved fairy tales and a great way to start a conversation about interrupting.
Educational Themes:

This is a perfect way to start a conversation about interrupting. That said, Little Red pre-empts the events in a fairy tale, not a conversation. For older readers/listeners (first and second grade) it is a great way to introduce the idea of fractured fairy tales and creative writing.

Reading Level:
2.0
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:

Read by an 8-year-old girl.
Purchase Recommendation:
Buy. This is destined to be a new classic. It has well-known fairy tales embedded in it and offers a story of its own, too.
