Island Potty Party (The Playdate Kids)

Little brother needs to go to the bathroom, but he doesn't want to use his diaper. So he asks his big sister for help. She and her friends use a song to give him (and little girls, too) a step-by-step guide on what to do.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This music book gives kids simple steps about learning good bathroom habits as they become big kids.

Content Awareness Factors:

The medical fact sheet is helpful for parents, but is probably beyond the target audience.

Little Kid Reaction

The book reminded our child of when s/he was "little." The CD got played a lot because s/he likes to dance. S/he wasn't interested in the book after the first time we read it.

Parent Reaction

We like the concept of explaining the process through music, but it is about three years too late for us. Although billed for kids reaching 6, it will only be of value if they are not yet potty-trained. We were surprised to see the age listed as suitable for kids 8 years old.

Type of Book:
This is a picture book that combines a story and song about toilet training. It comes with a CD
Educational Themes:

Music and pictures drive this book that help parents teach their kids to use the toilet. Although the vocabulary is suitable for 8-year-olds, the substance of the book is not one you would come back to as an "early reader book."

Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
6 to 9
Recommended Age To Read Together:
3 to 6
Age of child:
Read with child nearly 6 years old.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. The book is valuable if you are potty training, but will have little value after that. If you are in a Mom's group, you may want to buy a copy and share it.
