Purchase Recommendation:
Buy. All proceeds for the book benefit the Kangaroo Kids, Hospice Program for terminally ill kids. The story is sweet, and if there is a Maggie or Kate in your life, it will be nice for them to have.
Little Kid Reaction:

S/He wanted a second reading as soon as the first was finished. Now, it's a part of the regular collection that's in our preschooler's request rotation.

Parent Reaction:

The story is sweet, but left a question mark. The author seems to be hinting at more than just kindergarten fears, because Maggie "recognizes" a sadness in Kate's eyes, and sadness and the need to trust surface later in the story.

Pros:

The story is told nicely, and in a way that young readers will understand. Kids learning to read will find it a good practice book. The artwork draws on the talents of a sixth grader and gets kids involved in writing/publishing books!

Cons:

There are just a couple of tangential thoughts that take away from the friendship story. How does Maggie know Kate needs to trust someone?
