Mama

Summary:

A big sister translates her little brother's needs, as he can only say “Mama.”

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

The illustrations are very bright, lively, and very enjoyable. The text is fun to read and is realistic. There are not too many words per page, so even young children can listen to the story without getting bored.

Content Awareness Factors:

The narrator, who is the big sister, has some negative things to say about her little brother. However, nothing is harsh.

Little Kid Reaction

My child has begun to memorize all of the words. He sits in his bed and repeats “Mama, Mama, Mama” over and over again. So many times, in fact, that I went back into his room to see what he needed, only to discover he was looking at this book again!

Parent Reaction

This book is great and appealing to young and old. The text is written in verse, but uses words a child would say, such as “binky.” I particularly love the illustrations, which are child-like at times, and Piccasso-esque at times. Some pages have “Mama” made out of collage and are bright and colorful.

Type of Book:
This is a picture book with a sibling message.
Educational Themes:

There are several dimensions to the book. You can use the book to discuss families and family dynamics. The illustrations also offer an opportunity to talk about art (color, collage, etc.).
