Need help teaching party manners? Merrilee is your gal.

Summary:

Merrilee is very excited to be going to Princess Posey's birthday party. When she gets there she is surprised to see that the Princess has no decorations or even any food. Merrilee's friend didn't understand party manners, and Merrilee - with the help of her grandmother's Manners Manifesto - is excited to help her friend make this a great event.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

A clever story and friend-to-friend advice make this an excellent choice when you're trying to provide basic manners lessons.

Content Awareness Factors:

None.

Little Kid Reaction

At first our daughter thought we selected the book because of her behavior (well, maybe!) ... but then she settled into the story. She particularly liked how Posey and her friends mis-interpreted Merrilee's guidance. For example, when Merrilee said they needed to take turns, each of the girls started spinning in circles.

Parent Reaction

This is a clever presentation of the etiquette we want to teach our kids. Although it looks to be a preschool book on the surface, there is still value in reading this with an elementary audience. The older kids will more quickly pick up on the idioms.

Type of Book:
This picture book offers simple lessons in manners and also shows how funny language can be.
Educational Themes:

On the surface this looks like a book for girls about manners. It is for both boys and girls and it is about more than etiquette. Grandma's Manners Manifesto uses idioms that make sense to adults but can easily confuse kids ... and gives you a chance to talk about language.
