Muriel's Red Sweater

Muriel loves her red sweater and decides to wear it while she delivers her birthday party invitations. Her sweater unravels as she goes from friend to friend. She does not see it unravel but the pictures show that each friend uses a part of the yarn for something they need. One friend uses it as a shoelace, one as a kite string, and one as a balloon string. By the time Muriel gets home, the sweater is down to nothing. She is upset until her friends show up for the party and surprise her with a new blue sweater.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This picture book offers a positive, lighthearted example of how we care for others and that we all lose things we like but they can be replaced.

Content Awareness Factors:

Little Kid Reaction

I selected this book because my daughter's favorite shirt had just unraveled to nothing, too. She liked how the friends were able to use the yarn from her sweater. She also liked that they came to her party and knew that she needed a new sweater and bought her one. She laughed at the different friends using the yarn. She said it was so nice of them to give her a new sweater.

Parent Reaction

I liked that the friends share in her birthday and notice that she needs a new sweater and get one for her. I also liked how the author showed how the yarn from her sweater was being used by others.

Type of Book:
This picture book offers a story about accidents, friendship, sharing, and being flexible.
Educational Themes:

There are several layers to this story which will engage preschoolers and kindergartners. You can contrast intended sharing (planned birthday party) and unintended sharing (unraveled pieces of sweater); talk about recycling ... the loss of the sweater benefited others; and friendship.
