Meet Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan (16), aka Ms. Marvel, is a Pakistani girl who just wants to be a “normal” high school teenager. She’s also a big fan of the Avengers, so much so that her friends call her a nerd. One night she sneaks out of her house to go to a party. Little does she know this decision will change her life forever.
BTSYA / Teen Reader (17):
As a big fan of Marvel, I had some expectations of what this comic would be like. I am pleased to say that even in the first volume, it exceeds each and every one of them! Not only is Kamala a wonderful protagonist, but she opens up a world of diversity in the Marvel heroes by having a Muslim-American character as a hero.
The plot isn’t confusing at all, and I immediately found myself connecting with Kamala. As a 17 year old myself, it was awesome to see such a strong and relatable character be around my age.
Readers who love comics, graphic novels, and expanding their world will find a superhero in Kamala Khan.
None, though it is important to note that the reading level (3rd grade) is NOT indicative of the appropriate target audience. The comic is rated 12+ rating and includes topics too mature for someone under the age of 12 to read.
This is a high interest/low reading level book for teens and young adults.
Teens looking to see themselves in a book will be ready to celebrate diversity and strong girls.
