A must-read says our teen ... just don't forget the hankie!

Summary:

Carley Conners (12) grew up in Las Vegas and, thanks to her lively mother, learned to be street smart through all their experiences together. After suffering a beating from her step-father, Carley is taken into foster care. She is placed with the Murphys, a foster family who has a completely opposite approach to life than anything she has ever known.

Initially, Carley keeps her feelings hidden as she has always done. It's the only way she knows to protect herself. She keeps her distance, but watches how the Murphys live as a family. Slowly, she changes her mind about not wanting to be part of the Murphy family. Carly adjusts and learns about a different way of living life and bonds with the Murphys ... then her mother calls.

BTSYA / Teen Reader (13):
The author has crafted this story so beaufifully that the audience not only relates to it, they learn from it. With its emotions and intense storyline (plus exceptional writing) One for the Murphys is truly one of a kind.

Carley’s quirky perspective makes readers feel like they are in her shoes experiencing her journey alongside her. I really admired the way Hunt subtly adds hints of life lessons and morals to learn from within the story; whether it iswhen Carley realizes that she shouldn’t have judged Toni, or when she musters up the courage to finally open herself up to the Murphys.

Because of the implied emotional violence and the physical abuse that prompts Carley's move to foster care, this book is better suited for an older audience (12 and up). The story is powerful and I think it would make a great gift for anyone who likes realistic fiction!

As real and original as it gets! You'll want the tissue box for the ending, but it is SO worth it!
