The story has several layers: parenting, orphans, and adoption; caring for others and sharing one's strengths; and geography and exploration.

This could go either way. If you're looking for a book to celebrate Dad's love, definitely pick this one for your library! If you're not sure about the adoption element, borrow it first.
S/He sat at quiet attention, taking in the whole story. This became a request for several days running.
This story about fatherhood (in this case as a single parent) is a nice change … and an opportunity for Dad to take center stage! The venue--the canals of Venice--complemented the story well.
The illustrations are great, and offer wonderful segways from the text itself for "exploring" Venice. The themes are layered well; with the author keeping them light and enjoyable.
