Poetry Speaks To Children (Book And Cd)
Classic poets and modern poems fill this book with material you can share with your child, whether you are reading or listening to the poem's author recite the verse.
The illustrations help bring images to children who may not yet have the ability to perceive the abstract from the sound of the lyric. The book has nearly 100 poems, with many on CD so parents can listen along, too.
Listening to the poets was actually rather disappointing, as many read them quite monotone … not the way parents read with their kids. And not the way to encourage kids to get excited about language or poetry.
S/He quickly identified favorite poems, largely by the illustrations, and sometimes by the poem itself. Up to this point, although we get regular requests to share the book, we have never had a complete recitation.
This is a book you'll want to do in small bits … or keep playing in the background while your child goes off to a quiet activity.
This is a poetry book with a CD.
You can use this book strictly as a means of introducing poetry, or you can take the opportunity to encourage fun with language and creative writing.

Started reading with 4-year-old child.
This could go either way. If you haven't introduced poetry before, you will want to "test drive" it. If you want a nice collection of poems for your library, this is one to have.
