At the end of Uglies, Tally had gotten the ugly-to-pretty operation. She lives in New Pretty Town and belongs to the Crims, the most respected clique in town. As planned, her old friends from the Smoke delivered a package with pills that are intended to cure the lesions that the doctors installed during the operation. Because Tally chose her newest friend Zane for sharing the pills, Shay ends their friendship.
Tally and Zane each take one pill, not realizing they are meant to be taken as a pair. Zane becomes very ill. The pill not only eats the lesions, but other parts of his brain. The two escape New Pretty Town and head out to meet the rest of the members of the Smoke. However, due to a tracker implemented in Zane’s tooth, Special Circumstances (the government) arrives again. They bring a new team that includes Shay. Tally is captured and turned into one of the Specials. What happens next is in the third book.
BTSYA / Teen Reader (14):
I liked original was better. In fact, this is my least favorite of the series. The author tried to do too much. I get that he was trying to do a whole section on teenagers, but it is overly cheesy and didn’t really feel like what a teenager is. All the “bubbly” and “Tally-wa” stuff just seemed a bit over-the-top. Additionally, the plot is a bit too similar to the first book: escape, capture, and “bad guys get them in the end.'' Because of those two things, I give it 2.5 stars.
Readers who were curious about the "What Next" for Tally and Shay will breeze through this next "chapter" in the adventure.
Although listed as "middle grade" on the AR Bookfinder, most other sources list this as young adult. The themes and relationships would support the recommendation of those sources.
This is the middle book in a dystopian trilogy that is built around the theme of teen angst and self awareness/doubt.
The author has 10 great questions for the series on his website. We have a link to it in our review of Pretties.
