Princess Peepers Picks A Pet

Summary:

There is going to be a pet show at the Royal Academy for Perfect Princesses. Unfortunately, Princess Peepers has only the bugs from her collection. The other princesses quickly explain that pets have two or four legs ... not six. And when Peepers finds a frog, they add that pets are furry and cuddly ... not slimy. What's a princess in training to do?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Girls will appreciate Peepers, a unique and clever princess, and can learn lessons about creativity, kindness, and even being specific.

Content Awareness Factors:

None.

Little Kid Reaction

My daughter instantly liked Princess Peeper's individuality and that she wasn't like all of the other princesses ... but she also was upset at how "mean" they were about it. She laughed when Peepers flew into the auditorium with her pet.

Parent Reaction

This is a fun story and a nice balance of princess-y stuff and everyday lessons. The illustrations complement the text by adding emotion ... and give just enough to keep readers turning the pages. The alliteration in the title and the princess names is wonderful and keeps it just on the edge of being a tongue twister. This would be an excellent choice for readers who need more text (there is lots of repetition) but who aren't quite ready for chapter books.

Type of Book:
This picture book celebrates individuality and creative thinking.
Educational Themes:

The obvious point of discussion is judging others and acceptance. There are opportunities to stop and ask how the reader would feel or what they see in the expressions of the various princesses. It is also a nice story to use for creative thinking and perseverence
