This book highlights influential people who are apart of the LGBTQ+ community. It is written in very short chapters and includes a short summary of the person's life and achievements. It starts off in the year 203 with Elagabus, a transgender woman who was a Roman Emperor. And it ends in present day with George Takei, an actor who is an actor and social justice warrior, and also happens to be a gay man.
Adult Volunteer Reader (31):
This book is very interesting, easy to read, and a great book for "stop and start" reading on because the biographies are short and to the point. I learned a lot about influential members of the LGBTQ+ community and how the laws have changed over time.
Im not sure whether I'd read this again. It is interesting and I learned a lot, but I think it would be better if the stories had more detail about the person's achievements. Instead, it focused mainly on their lifestyle to the point that sometimes I wondered what they had achieved and why they were important enough to be featured in the book.
A reader would be interested in reading this book of they were looking to expand their knowledge on notable LGBTQ community members and some of the history from this organization's past.
There are some sexual terms and descriptions that parents or the reader should be made aware of. Some of the laws are very descriptive.
This is a collection of biographies about LGBTQ+ individuals who have changed the world.
Many, if not most, of the individuals whose biographies are shared will be unknown to young readers. Some may be surprised to hear evidence about President Abraham Lincoln. Does this change how your reader thinks of him? or how he is portrayed in history? What a great opportunity to talk about social mores and what influences our thinking.
Hopefully, readers will be inspired to learn more about other unknown-to-them changemakers in this book.
