This book is a resource book for a children’s theater workshop. It is comprised of stories, poems, and plays. The stories are very diverse, and go from a medieval story with princes and duchesses to another futuristic, sci-fi like story. Certainly there will be a tale for everyone to like, no matter what genre he or she prefers! Though each piece can be enjoyed by an indivdual reader, the material is really writtten to be recited or presented from the the stage.
The short stories, poems and plays can serve as preparatory/practice material or as presentation quality pieces.
A middle or junior high school student, looking for a book of short stories, or poems, or short plays would find the presentation of material in this book to be disjointed and too few of the poems, plays, or stories that for which he or she might be primarily interested.
The tales are very easy to read, but have complex undertones for older, more mature readers. I found parts of this book very fascinating and engrossing. Overall, though, the book is a disappointment. The collection of stories is faded as a whole, with only certain parts that are intriguing. Some stories were so convoluted and dry I lost interest in finishing them. I would not recommend this book to my friends, although I may ask them to read specific stories that I found particularly fascinating.
The variety of the materials and genres provides something to meet the interests and talent level of middle or junior high school actors and pique the interest of an audience.
This is a book for interactive reading.
The theater coach or drama director might want to have this book on a resource shelf.
