sabriel (abhorsen trilogy)

Summary:
Sabriel is the 18-year-old heroine of this macabre fantasy. Her father, Abhorsen, is a Mage who is trapped in the Old Kingdom. Like her father, Sabriel is a necromancer who uses Magic for good. This is not the case in the Old Kingdom, where spirits are trying to build power for evil. Sabriel enlists two friends and together they launch an effort to find and rescue her dad. Can they find him and rescue him? Can they save themselves?
Educational Themes:
Sabriel is a fantasy novel aimed at a segment of the preteen audience whose interest in magic, necromancy, vampires, etc. is almost a rite of passage. For that group the book can be a fun read and a great discussion starter.

Big Kid Reaction
For those who relish the macabre, this is an imaginative and fast-paced fantasy. It is difficult to distinguish yourself in this very-full genre. This book is enjoyable, but not remarkable. Adolescents will enjoy the characters, adventure, and gore this trilogy offers.
Pros:

This is a fast moving adventure story written for adolescents who enjoy grossing-out their friends and family.

Cons:

The pace and plots are a blessing and a curse. They are a blessing in that they keep the story interesting and fast paced. They are a curse in that the number of twists and turns become repetitive and have a tendency to lose or overwhelm the reader.
