Sadie (a giraffe) is very excited about the school art fair. She has been making bead necklaces, but now she's not feeling so well. When Dr. Hippo tells her it is strep throat, Sadie wants to know what she (and her Mom) can do to get all better in time for the fair.
Kids will easily relate to Sadie, in this picture book about getting sick at the "wrong time."
Sadie tells her mom that she's making a surprise, but then it drops, with no other visual or text references. At the end, a judge comments on "Popsicle Sadie," giving you a hint at what the surprise might be, but it is a pretty subtle reference. Preschoolers love surprises, but if you can't find it, then they may be disappointed.
We were asked to read this a couple of nights in a row. There was an ulterior motive. S/he wanted us to get to the page about Popsicles and ice cream and remind us that ice cream is good when you're sick!
The good news is our child listened to what Dr. Hippo had to say! The story is great for preschool and elementary-aged students. We love how it offers information about illnesses in a way kids can understand, but also includes a factual information card at the back.
This title in the Dr. Hippo series helps families recognize the symptoms of strep. It also includes a pull-out guide for parents.
Kids understand sore throats (and strep), because they are common ailments. In addition to getting some factual information (symptoms, treatment), the story also offers ideas for things kids can do while they get better.

Started reading with a 6-year-old child.
Borrow, at least! Depending how often your child gets a sore throat, s/he may want to cuddle up with Sadie. The book helps them learn the symptoms and treatment, and Mom & Dad have a factual information card to help, too. This is a great book for a new Mo
