You believe him, right?

Meet Tulip, a Goliath birdeater tarantula. Mr. Dougal brought her to Sam's class for a visit and to let the students ask questions. The more Sam learned about Tulip the more fearful he became (not that he told anyone). After lunch, everyone wrote down their questions about Tulip. When Ms. Winkleworth asked for volunteers to deliver the questions to Mr. Dougal, Regina held up her hand and Sam's.  When they got to the 6th Grade Science Lab, they learned Tulip had escaped her cage!

The time for bravery has arrived again! Sam, Zoe and Bernard were going to find Tulip and save the school. How DO you catch a spider Goliath birdeater tarantula?

Parent Perspective:
Sam Wu is engaging and funny. He is an every kid" to whom his peers will relate ... which goes for his "nemesis" Ralph, too. The author does a great job showing readers that bullies are bullies because of their own fears.

Great news: You can read these as "single books," and don't have to read them in sequence order! We read Book 1 (Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Ghosts) and then this one (Book 4) and did not feel left out for not having read books 2 (... Sharks) and 3 (... the Dark).  The stories are delightful and fun. Kids will laugh out loud, ask for extra chapters, and be searching for the next book. Highly recommended as a preteen gift.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Sam Wu is back and as "brave" as ever! Readers will connect with Sam and his friends as they search for the missing class pet - and laugh along the way!

Content Awareness Factors:

None. Tulip the tarantula is a class pet. Even if your reader is truly afraid of spiders, her "role" is minimal to the plot.

Type of Book:
This is the third book in the humorous, slice of life series about a boy and his fears.
Educational Themes:

Enjoy this story for fun! Sam shares some cultural information, such as his favorite foods. Why not find a local restaurant to try the dishes Sam describes?

Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
9 and Up
Recommended Age To Read Together:
9 and Up
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. Fun to read, but not likely to be a re-read.
