sid the science kid: why are my shoes shrinking?

Summary:

Sid the Science kid wakes up to discover his shoes don't fit anymore. They fit last summer, so why are they shrinking? He learns the it's REALLY that HE is GROWING! Through interactions with his parents, his friends at school, and his teacher, he learns about how living things grow.

Educational Themes:

This is all about basic science concepts and the scientific process (i.e., investigation). The theme is that all living things grow, and you can expand the concept by planting a flower / tree, or going through family photo albums.

Reading Level:
2.6
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
7 to 9
Recommended Age To Read Together:
4 to 8
Age of child:
Read with two boys ages 2 and 4.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. This is one in a series of books that is based heavily on a TV show. If you like the TV show, you'll like the books, but it doesn't mean you'll want them all in your library.
Little Kid Reaction

My children had a mild reaction to the book, but were engaged by it and wanted to read it again. My 2 year old was asking about the characters (not the subject matter), and my 4 year old enjoyed trying to figure out which plant was the oldest based on its size.

Big Kid Reaction

I like the book and love the way the TV show presents scientific principles and concepts at the level of a preschooler. I also love the way the show encourages open-mindedness, thinking outside of the box, investigation, question-asking. The story introduces very simple science concepts, and one science word, "transformation" (when something changes into something else), but I did not see a clear connection to the concept of growing.

Pros:

This is a great choice for introducing science concepts at the preschool level. It is a fun theme that preschoolers can relate to. The illustrations are screen shots of the digital animation from the show, which makes them super cute and great if your child likes the show.

Cons:

None.
