Something Shiny, Something Round

Summary:

Sam is awakened by the sound of melting snow. Still, there's enough snow to play in for now. When Sam, Sally and Suzy took a fall off their sled, they found something very interesting. Not sure what it is, the trio imagines all kinds of things that silver disc can be.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

The story is as freewheeling as you want it to be. The activities in the back give you opportunities to do things with your child. Best of all, though, it demonstrates how friends can take on a role in someone else's imaginary scene! and then take their own turn.

Content Awareness Factors:

None.

Little Kid Reaction

Our preschooler joined in with the imaginary activities described by Sam, Suzy, and Sally. When we finished reading this the first time, all other activity (like fixing dinner) had to stop so that we could make a telescope!

Parent Reaction

It was nice to see Sam again, this time engaged with friends in pretend play. The activities page in the back offer some great opportunities for further exploration and fun ... much more so than the first book.

Type of Book:
This is a story that celebrates and encourages kids to use their imaginations.
Educational Themes:

This is a great baseline for encouraging imaginative play. Whether you have something shiny and round, or want kids to imagine other objects, this is a good place to start. You can also go beyond the imaginative play to more serious "study" of planets, pirates, French culture and food, and music.
