Caroline Oresteia (17) grew up on her father’s wherry knowing that one day she would be its captain. The Oresteia family is made up of a long line of bold wherrymen known for their daring adventures, success, and blessings from the river god. Because the Oresteias can speak to the river god, it was a given that the Oresteias were one with him. Her father started hearing the god when he was a young boy, but Caro has never heard so much as a whisper. Her father continues to reassure her that one day she will know her fate.
When her dad is taken prisoner after refusing to transport mysterious cargo, Caro accepts the deal, hoping to save her father and possibly find her fate. Chased by terrifying pirates who are willing to kill her for her cargo, the young wherry captain's curiosity about her cargo is ever gnawing at her. What she discovers leaves her reeling - this changes everything.
BTSYA / Teen Reader (14):
Song of the Current is a brilliant story of strength, trust, and destiny. Caro thought she was sure of her entire future, but her story is a reminder not to be afraid to embrace your individuality and face your destiny, even if it's something you never expected. When fate brought her somewhere she never planned to be, she found strengths she never knew she had and a future brighter than she ever expected. This is a great book for those who are facing life changes and uncertainty. It gives readers hope that maybe there is brighter future where you are headed.
I recommend borrowing this sailing adventure from the library rather than buying it. It is a wild adventure and breath-taking page turner, but it is not a book I would reread many times. Bottom line: Song of the Current is a great read for adventure-seeking readers ready to get lost at sea battling pirates and fighting for your lives. This book is magical in its own way and a wild ride you wouldn’t want to miss.
There is something for every fantasy-loving adventurer: pirates, secrets, romance, and a strong main character who defies the "girl meets boy" trope.
The plot contains profanity, sexual references, and violence.
This is a high-seas fantasy adventure featuring a strong girl as the main character.
Beyond the adventure, this is a story of self reliance and personal growth. What did Caro learn about herself? Can your reader see themselves in similar situations? Did Caro have control over her future? What role did that 'mysterious shipment' play in showing her her future?
