Start Saving, Henry!

Henry is seven. He earns a weekly allowance of $5.00, but he doesn't do a good job of saving it. He finds one toy he is really interested in and tries to save so he can get it. The story shows how he struggles to save enough by not buying things every time he finds something he likes.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This picture book offers kids (and parents) a great message about spending and saving written in an easy to understand and fun way.

Content Awareness Factors:

Little Kid Reaction

My daughter picked this book it because it was about saving money. She enjoyed watching how he spent his money. She also liked how he kept trying to save but it was hard because he found things he wanted. She enjoyed the parts where he tries to earn some money

Parent Reaction

I liked this book! It has a strong lesson about being responsible with your money even when you are just a kid. It was not preachy and yet had a great message that was easy for all children to understand. I wasn’t sure my daughter would like the book as it was about saving and not spending but she did. She actually related to the story and talked about the book later when we were at the store looking at toys.

Type of Book:
This is a book that helps kids understand the value of money, saving, and discipline.
Educational Themes:

The key lesson in the story is that you can't have everything you want. Kids can learn not only about saving, but that you need to earn money. Although built around the idea that Henry needs to save money, you can extrapolate goal setting, discipline, and perseverance to any other subject.
