The Adventures Of Pelican Pete: Preening For Flight
Using poetic verse, our narrator introduces us to Pete, a pelican who has just been born. We follow Pete on his adventures as he grows from a baby with no feathers to a pelican each of us would recognize.
The tale moves quickly, effectively weaving pelican facts in a stylized poem. The fact sheet and ideas for supplemental reading are terrific.
None!
Our preschooler listened with rapt attention and watched Pete VERY closely as we read the poem. S/He particularly loved Pete's blue hat. After the first reading, we had a hard time getting her interested in Pete again, but s/he was clearly listening, as pelicans were instantly recognized at the beach (without prompting from Mom or Dad).
This is a fun read ... we've read it several times since, in part to look at the illustrations. Some are life-like enough to give you pause and think they're photos.
This is a fictionalized story, with plenty of pelican facts.
While the principal theme is a pelican's development, the story and fact sheets offer a way to introduce the ideas of water conservation, pollution, and wildlife safety.
