The Best Pet Ever

A little girl keeps asking her mom for a pet, and she always gets the same response "we'll see." Every time mom says that, the little girl looks around to see what could be a pet. Unfortunately, each of her perfect pets - a glove, a balloon, a candy wrapper - don't say around very long. So what IS the perfect pet?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Humor, simple language, and fun illustrations combine in a great story for preschoolers and young elementary-aged students alike. It is perfect for reading to young audiences or sharing the load with a developing reader.

Content Awareness Factors:

Little Kid Reaction

When we started, my daughter's refrain was "oh, mom, this is babyish." By the time we got to the search for pet #3, she took over the little girl's part and started reading. At the end it was "aw, this is cute."

Parent Reaction

This is a fun story that is fun to read with your child or have them read to/with you. The illustrations are fun and allow for decoding, but also independent humor (like bouncing on the stuffed chair). I can see why her initial reaction was that the story was young for her, but you can't ask much more than to have a book grab her and get her to read without saying a word. It is a perfect choice for partner reading, as it has very distinct parts and lots of repetition of early sight words.

Type of Book:
Using your imagination is the foundation of this book that answers a child's perennial question about getting a pet.
Educational Themes:

Yes, this is a story about wanting a pet, but it is also the story of a resourceful, imaginative little girl. She sees pet potential in everything from a rock to a glove. For older listeners/readers it is a chance to illustrate communication and/or idioms. When mom says "we'll see," the little girl thought she meant "look around you."

Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
6 to 9
Recommended Age To Read Together:
3 to 8
Age of child:
Read with and by a 9-year-old girl.
Purchase Recommendation:
Buy! This is a book that you'll read over and over again. If you've got young listeners it is a book you can put back on the shelf and pull out when they're learning to read for themselves.
