The Coffin Club (Vampire Kisses, 5)

For goth girl Raven, the adventures in the underworld never end. Anticipating summer vacation from Dullsville High was painful; and awaiting the return of Alexander, her vampire boyfriend, had been exasperating. Raven needed to get out of the house and be with her friends at the Coffin Club. While enjoying the ambiance of the club, she wandered around and accidentally discovered a secret passageway to a “vampires-only” club. Raven got caught up in a turf battle that was raging in the underworld and she is in danger of being trapped there forever.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This is a genre that young teen readers find extremely fascinating. The book will whet the reader’s appetite for more.

Content Awareness Factors:

Young Reader Reaction

The Coffin Club is a fairly easy read for 7th and 8th grade students. The plot, however, is very predictable and the characters are all very Twilight-esque. Ravenis the danger-prone girl who vies to be in the world of immortality while her boyfriend is the one saving her from all the trouble. The writing itself also gets repetitive. While a good use of descriptions and imagery aid the readers in envisioning the story as they read, the excessive use of similes in The Coffin Club make them redundant and bog down the flow of the story. Although this book is more geared towards junior high readers, some of the content and descriptions aren’t suitable for students that age. The Coffin Club is an actual club with typical club features: bouncers, under-age teenagers who slip in, and seductive dancers. Even as a junior in high school, I find it hard to classify this book. It doesn’t fit in readily with the junior high scene and it isn’t challenging enough for high school readers. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to many people.

Parent Reaction

Compared to some of the ghoulish works targeted for young teens, this is a wholesome and fun read. The author has written a fast-paced adventure story that is also an enjoyable reading experience. The author is very sharp, and knows her craft and her audience. You don't need to read the previous titles in the series to enjoy this one.

Type of Book:
This is the fifth title in this adventure series for preteens and teens.
Educational Themes:

Although you could draw out themes, this book is meant to be enjoyed as recreational reading. It is a great summer-reading book that will keep kids reading ... mostly because it doesn't look ANYTHING like something they would read for school.
