The Eyeball Collector

Summary:

Hector’s father, who is being blackmailed, dies. Now Hector must fend for himself. He vows to avenge his father’s death and has planned the perfect scheme. Will it work?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

This book is a quick paced, and teaches children that revenge is never the right answer.

Content Awareness Factors:

The book was very gruesome – in one chapter, one of the family cats is eaten by an entertainer while the residents of the home applaud. Also, blood is leached off a servant, and is used as paint.

Adult Reader Reaction

I liked this book. It teaches children life lessons on issues like revenge. It had an interesting storyline, but the vocabulary upper level, and it is very gruesome.

Type of Book:
This is a middle grade / young adult horror mystery. It has potential as a high interest / low readability book for older readers who like thrillers.
Educational Themes:

Within the story there is a lesson about revenge. The book also has a scientific element in it, as Hector is a butterfly expert.

Reading Level:
6.6
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
12 and Up
Recommended Age To Read Together:
10 and Up
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow. This book is a good read, but I cannot get past its dark side. I would buy this book for a middle school studenr who enjoys scary, mysterious novels.
