The Hunger Games

Every year, the Capitol of Panem society use a lottery to pick two children to participate in the Hunger Games, their entertainment event. Katniss went in place of her younger sister who was initially chosen in the lottery. The other child is Peeta, who is secretly in love with her. During a series of near-death experiences in the Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta bond and grow more affectionate toward each other. Katniss is confused. She knows Gale, whom she loves dearly and has known for a very long time, is waiting for her at home. If she survives the Hunger Games, which boy will she choose?

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Compelling characters and lots of action make this a very enticing read. This is a crossover book that appeals to young adults and adults alike.

Content Awareness Factors:

As our teen reviewer noted: This is not a book for children younger than 12. Even though younger kids will be interested and that it is listed as "middle grade" and the reading level is upper elementary, the content is more mature.

Young Reader Reaction

I love this book and the author is a very talented writer, but I wouldn't recommend this book to children under 12 years old. This book has a lot of violence and it's sad to think that this could happen in real life. Readers who enjoy fantasy and adventure would enjoy this book.

Type of Book:
This is the story that sets up The Hunger Games trilogy.
Educational Themes:

There is a lot to explore in The Hunger Games trilogy.
