Veronica "Ronnie" Miller (17) is young and rebellious. She didn’t handle her parent’s chaotic divorce very well. For three years (ever since the divorce), Ronnie has refused to communicate with her father, Steve. Now he is inviting Ronnie and her younger brother Jonah to spend the summer at his beach house in Wrightville Beach, NC. It is the LAST place Ronnie wants to go for her summer. Her mom says they're going. Ronnie goes into the trip with a bad attitude, knowing her dad desperately wants to reconnect with her. Without spoiling the book, Ronnie's summer is filled with heartache, happiness, trials, tears, and joy (maybe she even meets a handsome young man). Can she survive it all?
Reader beware: you will read this cover to cover. And boys like it, too. [Just look at the amazon.com reviews!] Amazing storytelling and characters make this a great read for teens and young adults.
The Last Song is an unforgettable story good all the way to the last sentence! This book shows all different types of love, mainly the love between a parent and a child and a first love. I loved Ronnie, despite being angry about how childish she was acting towards the beginning. I love how the author didn’t try to make her out to be a perfect person, but showed that she was able to learn from her mistakes. Steve was very patient with Ronnie and her behavior. That is why he was one of my favorite characters. I love a good book that can keep me on the edge of my seat. This did that. Even so, there were times I was very anxious because it seemed the plot was moving too slow. The Last Song is a great book for teens, and younger readers. I’m sure that any young girl would enjoy receiving this book as a gift.
This is a young adult novel about relationships and love, shared from four points of view.
Read for fun, then come back and discuss the ins and outs of the various relationships. This is a nice selection for a parent-child book club.
