The Leaping Grasshopper

Summary:

A grasshopper is busy jumping from place to place. He's so happy with what he's doing, he doesn't realize he is ruining everyone else's day.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Kids will likely want to jump like a grasshopper with this one. For emerging readers, there is lots of vocabulary to work with.

Content Awareness Factors:

The characters in the illustrations don't offer a level of detail that help you discern whether the grasshopper is just busy or whether he is disrupting something. The subtlety of the presentation would seem to be lost on the preschool target audience without lots of external help.

Little Kid Reaction

Our child was struck by the grasshopper and his bouncing all over the place. S/He commented that the grasshopper jumped on the ladybug and probably hurt her.

Parent Reaction

It wasn't until we got to close to the end that we saw a theme to the story. We thought the grasshopper was just describing what other animals do as he went about his day; we didn't realize he was just oblivious to others.

Type of Book:
Enter a grasshopper's world in this rhyming adventure.
Educational Themes:

Once you understand there are lessons you can teach, focus your child on the grasshopper's activities and ask questions about what he's doing and how s/he would feel.
