Alessandra has lived in her sister’s shadow for years. When it is finally her turn to get married, she is already prepared with her plan. She is going to get close to the Shadow King, marry him, and then kill him to acquire his fortune and kingdom. Newly enthroned, the Shadow King is a mysterious boy king with the power to command his shadows. However, no one knows the extent of his power.
Almost immediately, Alessandra's efforts to act on her plan are being hindered. There are others who are attempting to kill the Shadow King. If her plan is going to work, the King must remain alive, and now Alessandra finds herself helping him. The deeper she delves into the court and the King's life, Alessandra uncovers hidden secrets and it turns out, executing her plan is going to be harder than she thought.
BTSYA / Teen Reader (15):
The Shadows Between Us is a captivating standalone novel. I almost finished it in one sitting. The plot is very intriguing and had so many twists and turns, I didn’t know what to expect and it left me reading on until the very end. Most of the novel left me on edge; however, there were a few parts that were a little slow.
I like the main characters(Alessandra, the Shadow King, others at court), but I think they could have had a little more development. Levenseller did a good job with Alessandra, making her a woman empowering character, facing insults thrown her way, the challenges she of being a lady, as well as her history. As a standalone novel, it may be more difficult to fully develop all the characters, but several definitely needed more development.
Because of some of the profanity, romance, and Alessandra's sexual references, I recommend this book for ages 14 and up. It is a great story with a hooking plot. Since it isn't a book I'd read again, I say borrow it at the library.
Twists and turns; murder plots and magic; and royals and romance! This young adult fantasy will have young readers glued to their chair reading about Alessandra to the very. last. page.
Profanity and sexual references. Alessandra talks a lot about her orientation and about her multiple past lovers.
This is a monograph that is part adventure, part romance, and part mystery.
This is a book to read for fun.

Borrow. Fun and suspenseful, but not a book you'll read again.
