the snowman's song: a christmas story

You may not hear them, but snowmen can talk. So it is, that our little snowman sends sends his thought questions to his mother: why can't I sing? When he asks the same thing of a cardinal, he learns there are several steps. The first one is believe in yourself. It isn't until a little girl comes to play with him that he learns the next lesson. What will it be?
Educational Themes:
Although this has "Christmas" in the subtitle, this is a story that can be read year-round and will resonate with all faiths, as it speaks to faith, hope, and love, which are central to all religions. You can also talk about feelings, friendship, self-respect/self esteem, and sharing, too.
Reading Level:
Recommended Age To Read By Yourself:
7 to 10
Recommended Age To Read Together:
3 to 9
Age of child:
Started reading with 6-year-old girl.
Purchase Recommendation:
Borrow or buy. This could go either way. It is an enjoyable story and it has great potential.
Little Kid Reaction:
We were surprised at our child's reaction. She liked the book, especially the "cute snowman," but she only wanted to read it a few times. Usually she will find the CD and play it to read along; but not this time.
Big Kid Reaction:
The snowman is cute and the illustrations are just wonderful. This is a nice story, but we found the text difficult to read at times, with rhymes that weren't well matched. The music on the CD brings the book to life and adds a "sparkle" of new-fallen snow.

Children will be captivated by this story that shows them snowmen are real, just like them.

The CD helps new readers understand the story's cadence. The author sets up a rhyming scheme, but then not every line rhymes or they don't match well.
