Kestrel (17), the aristocratic daughter of a Valorian general, spent 50 keystones on a slave named Arin (17). She was drawn to him because of his defiance. He was a slave because her father had invaded his homeland. What was she thinking? Given her position in society, word would surely spread about her bidding such a high price for a slave. Kestrel could never have imagined the true costs of buying Arin. The two never expected to fall in love. So where will their loyalty rest: with each other or their respective countries.
BTSYA / Teen Reader (16):
Who doesn’t love a little drama? Kestrel and Arin are star-crossed lovers: she is a valued Valorian and he is a Herrani slave. Yet that is what made their slow-burn romance all the better! In addition to the intriguing dilemma of Kestrel and Arin’s relationship, I was drawn into the war and strategy themes, as well. Kestrel is a strategist who knows how to crush her opponents in a gamble. Arin is the only one who can beat her at her own game. During their time together, different stakes arise, and they certainly switch things up.
This would make an amazing gift for fans (13 and older) who love romance, science fiction, and strategy!
Readers who like strong characters who challenge each other and match skills, will find a great pair in Kestrel and Arin. Romance fans and readers who like fictional military stories and adventure, will enjoy The Winner's Curse.
Graphic violence, alcohol, slavery, and sexual harassment are part of this story. With all the romance, readers can expect The Winner’s Curse to have some intimacy, but not so much to be a burden.
This is a fantasy/dystopian adventure that incorporates the societal theme of slavery.
What are Kestrel's redeeming qualities? What about Arin? Are there qualities that they didn't like in these characters and their relationship? Was it truly love or more manipulation? Will they choose love or loyalty?
