Not a secret: Ellery obsesses over True Crime stories. Is a secret: Homecoming queen killer.

Summary:

Echo Ridge, Vermont, seems like a small town from the outside, however it is anything but. Twins Ellery and Ezra Corcoran have never been there, but they have heard all about it. Their aunt went missing at 17, and when the homecoming queen was killed five years ago, everybody knew about Echo Ridge.

Now the twins find themselves moving there to live with a grandmother they hardly know. That's not the only surprise. School hasn't started yet, but someone is letting it be known that this year's homecoming will be just as dangerous - if not more - than the one five years ago. Soon after the threat, a girl goes missing. Ellery suspects that it is not just the town that has dark secrets, but that her mother and grandmother are hiding their own, too. What comes of the secrets that she finds? Will she crack the dark history enveloping this small town?

BTSYA / Teen Reader (15):
I could not put this book down. In my mind, everyone seemed like a suspect. I did not know what to expect and who to pin the blame on. Every time I thought I got a lead, the plot gave a jarring twist. McManus did a great job with this book, the plot was intriguing and captivating. Throughout the book, it felt as though I was with Ellery as she tried to uncover the mysteries occurring in her town.

Readers should know that Ellery's obsession with true crime weaves some dark themes into the story. The book is very suspenseful and at times can be eerie or spooky. I recommend it to readers 14 and older. This is a book I would buy and read again. I want to go back to Echo Ridge and see what clues I missed the first time around.

True crime and mystery lovers: be prepared to read this in one sitting. This is a gritty, gripping, and perfectly paced novel that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Content Awareness Factors:

The story contains profanity, graphic violence, and sexual situations. This is not a Hallmark mystery. There are darker themes and a lot of suspense, which may bother some readers.

Type of Book:
This is a mystery set in a small town in Vermont. It is very suspenseful and has a spooky sense to it that would be great for Halloween reads.
Educational Themes:

Did you recognize some of the cases that Ellery talks about? If not, encourage your crime lover to do a little research.

This is a book to read for fun, but if you have someone interested in forensics or detective work, encourage them to grab a notebook before they start reading. With each chapter, write down

1. What is known. These are facts, not opinions.

2. What is presumed to be known. Could be opinions, maybe circumstantial, maybe before-hand information.

3. What is unknown. Not just the killer, but what questions still need to be resolved.
