Cultural Awareness at an Early Age

Summary:

While the other kids are playing soccer and swinging, Yang and his action figure are in a different part of the playground creating poses. The kids want Yang to play with them, but Yang wants to keep doing his motions. The next day, Yang introduces his friends to Grandpa Ma, who is visiting from China. Grandpa Ma teaches the children Tai Chi, and they have fun learning different moves.

Parent Perspective:
I love this book! From the diversity of the children to the way Grandpa Ma explains Tai Chi the story paces itself well and presents the concepts in a way young listeners can understand. This would be a great book as the first step in introducing mindfulness to children, too. My only nit is with the title. There was nothing in the book until (literally) the last sentence that the children viewed Yang's moves like a dance.

Reader Enjoyment Factors:

Kids will be anxious to get up and move with Yang and his grandfather.  Yang's New Dance celebrates Asian culture, friendship, and family.

Content Awareness Factors:

None.

Type of Book:
This picture book introduces not only introduces kids to Chinese culture but celebrates family, too.
Educational Themes:

This is an excellent introduction about tai chi and understanding other cultures, but also about mindfulness, exercise, and respect. Yang wanted to be like his grandfather. What things does your child like about their grandparents?
